May 10 Youth Board Minutes May 22, 2008

Filed under: Youth Board — Angela @ 1:30 pm

Zion Youth Governing Board – called to order at 8:00 am at Bj’s.

Present: Sue Foster, Kim Gleason, Pastor Steve Svoboda, Myron Crawford, Amy Chalupnick, Jenny Paripovich and Rick Henne

Kim Gleason opened the meeting with prayer.

Myron shared year end information.

- Fundraisers: We made about $1000 each from the Easter Breakfast and Italian Dinner/Variety Show. About $500 was raised with the sale of nails. During the discussion of the fundraisers with concerns expressed about the lack of specifics, it was stated by Pastor Steve that in the past there has been a problem with receiving spreadsheets from the appropriate personnel that would include this information.

- As Kim read off the Key youth events for the 07 – 08 year, Myron provided approximate numbers of students that attended each event.

Expectations of Governing Board Defined:

Pastor Steve shared his model: Growth and Sustainability thru Discipleship where the possibility exists of governing board members doing Discipleship (or small group leadership) on Wed. evenings as well as providing strategic direction for youth ministry. He stated Zion would need to create this model. Other items discussed included:

- Governing Board would meet quarterly and Grow the Program continues to be important. Concerns were again expressed about the need for recruiting people, not just parents but others possibly even outside of Zion’s walls.

- Put in place the middle school and Sr. High boards again and include students on the board to help with the tactical items. Sue Foster stated that it is difficult to be on both boards and suggested that Governing Board members are different from the Middle School and Sr. High Boards or committees. Others agreed with this point.

- It was felt by at least 3 – 4 members that the Youth Governing Board should continue to be strategic in its nature and have regular reviews of the budget and agreed on stats. In addition, the need to insure that the infrastructure is built so that as new staff people come in, we don’t start over again.

- ACTION: Myron will set up the next Youth Governing Board meeting in August of 2008. Look for further details in late July/early August from Myron.

Mentoring and Small Groups/Leadership of Parents:

Myron and Pastor Steve talked about the use of Mentoring and Small group leadership meetings where meetings will be held for parents as well as students on a quarterly basis.

Some months discussed were September, December, March and June.

Topic ideas proposed included: Facebook Mainia, Internal Security Culture, Girl’s cutting, Bi-sexuality, Dating, On=line items, Healthy Relationships. Kim made the point of suggesting using a more positive spin on topics of concert. It was felt by the parent s in this group that Dating and what does a healthy relationship look like was a hot topic. Parents need and want help on this.

Action Staff: Pastor Steve noted that by the August Newsletter deadline (which is July 15th) we should have 4 topics and 4 dates for these meetings so parents/students et.al. can plan accordingly.

Amy Chalupnick closed with the meeting with prayer. Enjoy your summer everyone and God Bless!
